How to build a website for your business (without a developer)
Which sections a small-business website needs, how to make it look good on phones, how to get a domain and how to take payments, all without writing code.
If your business only lives on Instagram, WhatsApp or a market stall, a website can feel like something for big companies. It isn't any more. Today a baker, a tailor, a tutor or a phone shop can have a clean, fast website in an afternoon, without hiring a developer.
A website gives you something social media can't: a place you own. Your posts get buried by the algorithm. Your website stays where it is, open day and night, ready to show your prices, take orders and answer the same questions you get in your DMs every day.
This guide walks you through building a website for your business step by step: what to put on it, how to make it look good, how to get your own domain and how to take payments.
Why your business needs a website
- People search before they buy. When someone hears your name, they look you up. A proper website makes you look real and trustworthy.
- It works while you sleep. Customers can see what you sell and pay at 2am without waiting for a reply.
- It answers questions for you. Prices, delivery, opening hours and policies, written once.
- You own it. If a social account is blocked or hacked, your website is still there.
- It helps you get found. Google can show your website to people searching for what you sell.
Step 1: Decide what your website must do
Before you think about colours, decide the one main job of your site. For most small businesses it's one of these:
- Sell products (a shop with a cart and checkout)
- Take food orders (a menu with delivery or pick-up)
- Sell knowledge (courses, ebooks, coaching or live classes)
- Get bookings or enquiries for a service
Everything on the site should help that main job. If people come to buy, the "Buy" button should be the easiest thing to find.
Step 2: Plan the sections you need
A small-business website doesn't need dozens of pages. Most do well with these sections:
- A clear top (hero). One sentence that says what you do and who it's for, a strong photo and one main button.
- What you sell. Products, your menu or your courses, with prices and photos.
- Why buy from you. Three or four short reasons: fast delivery, handmade, ten years' experience.
- Reviews. Real words from real customers.
- About you. A short story and a photo of the person or team behind the business. People buy from people.
- Questions and answers. Delivery times, payment, returns, sizes.
- Contact. WhatsApp, email, social links, and your location if people visit you.
Write like you talk
Short sentences. Plain words. Say "We deliver across the city in 24 hours", not "We pride ourselves on world-class logistics solutions". Your website should sound like you on your best day.
Step 3: Design for phones first
Most of your visitors will arrive on a phone, often from a social media link and sometimes on a weak connection. So:
- Check every page on a phone before you check it on a computer.
- Use big, easy-to-tap buttons.
- Keep photos light. Huge images make pages slow, and slow pages lose buyers.
- Use two or three colours and one or two fonts. More looks messy.
- Make text large enough to read without zooming.
Good photos matter more than fancy design
A simple design with sharp, bright photos beats a clever design with dark, blurry ones. Take photos near a window in daylight, on a clean background, and show the product being used.
Step 4: Get your own domain name
Your domain is your address on the internet, like yourbusiness.com. A free address on someone else's platform works to start with, but your own domain looks more professional, is easier to remember and is yours to keep.
Choose a name that is short, easy to spell and close to your business name. We go into detail in our guide on how to get a domain name for your business.
Step 5: Set up payments
A website that can't take money is a brochure. Let customers pay right on the site, in the ways they're used to: card, bank transfer and mobile money, and crypto for some international buyers.
Avoid the old way of "send to this account and share a screenshot". It's slow, it invites fake receipts, and many buyers give up halfway. Read more in how to accept payments online.
Step 6: Launch, share and improve
- Share the link everywhere: your social bios, WhatsApp status, email signature, business cards and packaging.
- Ask your first customers for reviews and add them to the site.
- Look at your numbers. Which products get the most visits? Where do buyers come from?
- Update it often. New products, new photos, seasonal offers. A website that changes gives people a reason to come back.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Too much text at the top. Say what you do in one sentence.
- No prices. "DM for price" sends many buyers away.
- Hidden contact details. Make WhatsApp or email easy to find.
- Slow pages. Big photos and too many effects push people away.
- Building for a computer only. Your buyers are on phones.

Let Klaasi AI write it for you
Tell Klaasi AI what you sell and it picks a design and writes every word: the top of the page, why buy from you, questions and answers, about you and delivery. It can write in English, Pidgin, French, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo or Swahili. It's saved as a draft, so you check and change anything before it goes live.
Sell anything from your website
Sell products, a food menu, courses, ebooks, files, coaching and live classes. Shops and restaurants get orders, delivery and stock in the same dashboard. Visitors in Nigeria see prices in naira and everyone else sees US dollars, and buyers pay by card, bank transfer, mobile money or crypto. Every sale goes to your Klaasi wallet.
Your own .com
Every shop gets a free address like klaasi.com/yourname. On Pro and Business you can open your website on your own domain, and you can search for and buy a .com, .store, .shop or .online inside your Klaasi dashboard. Klaasi connects it and sets up the padlock (https) for you.
Fast on any network
Pages are built for phones first and kept light, so they open quickly even on slow connections. Pictures are resized for phones automatically.
