How to start an online business from your phone (step by step)

No laptop, no office, no big budget. Here's how to pick an idea, test it, set up a shop, take payments and get your first customers using only your phone.

You can start an online business from your phone today. Millions of people already run real businesses this way: they take the photos, answer customers, post on social media and collect payments, all from the device in their pocket.

What stops most people isn't the phone. It's not knowing the order of things. This guide gives you that order: how to choose an idea, test it without wasting money, set up a place where people can pay, deliver what you sell, and find your first customers. It works whether you sell a skill, a digital product, clothes or food.

What you need to start an online business from your phone

Less than you think:

  • A smartphone with a working camera and enough space for photos and videos.
  • Data or Wi-Fi. You don't need fast internet all day, just enough to post and reply.
  • An email address and, ideally, a separate WhatsApp Business number for customers.
  • Something to sell. We'll get to that next.
  • A way to get paid that doesn't involve chasing people for transfer screenshots.

You don't need a registered company to start testing an idea, a website developer or a laptop. You can add those later if the business grows.

Step 1: Choose an online business idea you can run from a phone

The best phone business is one where the work fits on a small screen. Some ideas that do:

Sell what you know

  • A digital product: an ebook, a checklist, a template, a planner, a set of presets. You make it once and sell it many times. If you're not sure what to make, read digital products to sell online.
  • An online course: short video lessons recorded on your phone. See how to create an online course for free.
  • Coaching or consulting calls: people book a time and pay for an hour of your advice.
  • A paid live class: teach a group at one time, from your phone.

Sell a service

Graphic design, CV writing, social media management, video editing, tutoring, make-up, photography. The work may happen offline, but the booking, invoicing and payment can all happen on your phone.

Sell physical things

Clothes, beauty products, food, crafts, phone accessories. You'll need a way to deliver, but the shop itself can live on your phone. If food is your thing, see how to sell food online and take orders.

How to choose

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. What do people already ask me for help with?
  2. What would I happily do for a year?
  3. Who would pay for it, and can I reach them online?

The idea that has a clear "yes" to all three is the one to start with. Don't chase what's trending if you can't keep it up.

Step 2: Test the idea before you spend money

Before you buy stock or spend weeks making something, check that people want it:

  • Post about the problem you solve on your WhatsApp status, Instagram or TikTok and see who replies.
  • Ask directly: "I'm putting together a short guide on X. Who wants it when it's ready?"
  • Pre-sell: offer a launch price to the first ten people. If nobody pays at a fair price, change the offer before you build more.

A few real buyers tell you more than a hundred likes.

Step 3: Set up a shop on your phone

Selling only through DMs works for the first few orders. After that it gets messy: people ask the same questions, you lose track of who paid, and every sale needs you awake and online.

A simple online shop fixes that. It gives you one link where people can see what you sell, the price, and a button to pay. On Klaasi you can set one up from your phone in a few minutes. You pick a shop name, say what you sell, and add your first product.

On Klaasi, adding a product starts with one question: what are you selling?

When you add a product, you choose what kind it is (a course, an ebook, a file, a coaching call, a live class, a membership or a bundle), give it a name and description, and set your price. You set one price, in naira or in dollars, and Klaasi works out the other. Buyers in Nigeria see naira and everyone else sees dollars.

The step-by-step version is in Getting started on Klaasi.

Make your shop look trustworthy

People buy from shops that look cared for. On your phone you can:

  • Add a clear profile photo or logo and a short line about who you are.
  • Write product descriptions that say who it's for and what they'll get.
  • Use bright, clear photos. Natural light from a window beats a dark room every time.
  • Add links to your social pages so buyers can check you're real.

If you want your shop to look more personal, how to set up your shop profile walks through the photo, banner, bio and links.

Step 4: Make it easy to pay

This is where many phone businesses lose sales. "Send me your account number" leads to back-and-forth, wrong amounts and fake payment screenshots.

A good checkout should:

  • Show the price clearly in the buyer's currency.
  • Let people pay the way they prefer: card, bank transfer, mobile money.
  • Confirm the payment by itself, so you don't have to check every alert.
  • Deliver the product or confirm the order straight away.

Klaasi's checkout does all of this. Buyers only need an email address. For digital products, they get instant access after paying. For physical items, you get the order with the customer's details. Klaasi's fee depends on your plan and how the buyer pays; see the pricing page for the current numbers.

Step 5: Deliver what you sell

How you deliver depends on what you sell:

  • Digital products: delivery should be automatic. The buyer pays and gets the download, course or class link right away, even at 3 a.m.
  • Services: confirm the booking quickly and say exactly when the work will be done.
  • Physical products: agree on a delivery method before you sell. Know your delivery costs so they don't eat your profit.

Whatever you sell, reply to messages quickly and keep your promises on time. A small business grows on word of mouth, and word of mouth comes from good delivery.

Step 6: Find your first customers

You don't need ads to get your first sales. Start with people who already know you:

  1. Tell your circle. Post on your WhatsApp status, share in groups you belong to (where it's allowed), and message people who have asked you for help before.
  2. Post useful content. Short tips, before-and-after photos, a quick video showing how you work. Every post should end with where to buy.
  3. Put your shop link everywhere. Your Instagram and TikTok bio, your WhatsApp Business profile, your email signature.
  4. Ask happy buyers for a review. New visitors trust other buyers more than they trust you.
  5. Offer a small launch discount with a coupon code, so people have a reason to buy now.

Step 7: Track what works and keep going

Once a few sales come in, watch your numbers: how many people visit your shop, how many buy, and which posts send buyers. Do more of what works and drop what doesn't.

Your Klaasi dashboard shows what you earned in the last 30 days, your orders, visitors and what's ready to withdraw, all on one phone screen.

When money comes in, it goes to your wallet. You withdraw to your bank, mobile money or another payout account. See how to get paid and withdraw on Klaasi.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until everything is perfect. Launch with one good product. Improve it as you learn.
  • Selling to everyone. "For everybody" means for nobody. Pick a clear type of customer.
  • Pricing too low. Cheap prices attract hard customers and leave no room for delivery, fees or growth.
  • Mixing personal and business money. Keep track of what comes in and what goes out from day one.
  • Disappearing. Post regularly, even when sales are slow. Most people buy after seeing you several times.

Your phone business checklist

  1. Pick one idea that people already ask you about.
  2. Test it with a pre-sale or a simple post.
  3. Set up a shop with clear photos and a short bio.
  4. Add your first product with an honest description and a fair price.
  5. Share your shop link everywhere you post.
  6. Deliver fast and ask for reviews.
  7. Check your numbers every week.

Starting an online business from your phone doesn't need permission or a big budget. It needs a clear offer, an easy way to pay, and the habit of showing up. You can create your free Klaasi shop and add your first product today.
